Thornpaw nodded, at first a little sheepishly, but then with more vigor. Now that the throb in her paw had all but stopped, she once again felt as though she could take on the world. And the Clan could always use more fresh kill right? “Yeah lets get started!” She mewed with enthusiasm, kneading the ground with her paws, her nose tasting the air for the scents of potential prey.

He laughed," Okay look at my stance." He mewed, moving sideways and crouching down. His weight perfectly balanced on his hind legs. His muscles rippling under his fluffy dark gray pelt. He smiled, his yellow gaze brightening as the sun hit it. He narrowed his eyes against the bright circle.

Thornpaw watched her mentor’s stance with utter interest. His body balanced with perfect ease, his muscle clear through his thick pelt of fur. She attempted to imitate the stance, lowering herself into a crouching position, her legs straining to get it right. She didn’t feel completely balanced though, and that annoyed her to know end. Though her stance looked correct, she felt like she would blow over the second the wind picked up. “Augh!” She yowled, mostly to herself. “Why can’t I get this right? Its so easy its frustrating!” She flopped down to a defeated sitting position and commenced with muttering to herself about how inadequate she was.

Scorchedtail gathered his muscles, pouncing on his apprentice," stop!" He snarled," You don't need to beat yourself up." He let her go, sitting down," Try again!" He ordered his patience running thin because of her bad attitude, She will soon have her bad attitude gone if she's going to remain my apprentice! He thought to himself.

She didn’t struggle when Scorchedtail leaped on her and snarled in her face. She merely met his smoldering gaze with one of her own, understanding with extreme clarity that he would not put up with failure. And quite frankly neither would she. She when he finally let her up, and ordered her to attempt it once again she did. Just a little annoyed, she lowered herself on all fours, picturing the stance that he had displayed earlier. With claws extended she gripped the ground like it was going to slip away and focused her mind on the task at hand. He balanced her long body, after a moment, and finally succeeded. She shot a glance at her mentor. “Like this?”

Scorchedtail nodded his yellow gaze blazing with happiness," Yes good!" He mewed,' Do you want to hunt more or practice a little bit of fighting?" He asked his rough voice softing slighty. He smiled and looked at hise apprentice.

Thornpaw couldn’t help but beam at the praise. She was quite the sucker when it came to praise. “Well, what do you think we should do? I’m up for anything!” She mewed enthusiastically, bouncing a little on her hind legs.

Scorchedtail smiled," We'll hunt then go back to camp. We need the fresh-kill. Tomorrow we'll fight." He mewed and disappeared as a robin let out a small call. He caught it and returned with it. Picking it up with his other catch.

A smile laced Thornpaw’s lithe figure. She stood beside her mentor and drank in the essence that was the forest, exploring its every smell. Sifting through each scent with delicate precision she smelled a musty sort of smell, like stale leaves. Her ears twitched, informing her mentor of her find; Squirrel. The scent deepened as she crept close, the sun-dappled ground allowing her to slip by unobserved. She could see her prey now, a big red squirrel, in his prime, scuffling among the leaves, his tail twitching in a fury, unawares. She could hardly feel herself breath as she crept the last few mouse-lengths, closing off his escape on the ground. Her muscles tightened as she readied for the pounce. She could hear nothing now, but the breath of the squirrel and he own beating heart. She leaped, the squirrel shrieked a cry of dread as she landed on it, crushing the air from its lungs, and then bit its throat, finishing it. She stepped back and studied her catch with a curious fascination then picked up its limp body and trotted happily back to her mentor unable to suppress a thundering purr of pride as she laid it at his feet. She looked up and beamed, “Hows that?”

" Excellent!" He purred and mewed," We should get back to camp now." He picked up his catch and raced away, hoping his apprentice would follow.

Thornpaw smiled; glad to have pleased her mentor on her first training session. She watched him run off back to the clan, where no doubt the clan was awaiting fresh kill. But before she picked up her prey to follow Scorchedtail, she took a moment to observe her surroundings. She would no doubt visit this place many times in her life in Shadowclan, but she still looked, and breathed in its scent. She then narrowed her eyes scooped up the squirrel, still warm, and the sparrow she picked of earlier, and raced after her mentor. She had just caught up with him when she remembered she had to clean the elder’s den and get ticks out of their wrinkle hides. She breathed a loud sigh through the prey she held, and then dismissed it with a small laugh. Its all part of being an apprentice I guess!
